Questions and Answers

Q. I was Told That I Need Nonstandard Auto Insurance. What is this?

A. This is terminology to describe those drivers whose past underwriting experience makes it almost impossible for them to obtain standard or preferred rates of auto insurance.

Drivers with serious violations, i.e. D.U.I., numerous accidents, involved in a recent serious accident, or have made numerous claims, may be considered factors in making them “high risk driver’s”.

Those drivers that find themselves in the nonstandard market are, inexperienced drivers, drivers of high-powered sports cars, custom built cars, specialized cars and drivers that have lapsed in coverage.

Insurance companies specializing in nonstandard auto insurance also attract drivers who are not nonstandard, on the basis that they offer a better deal than others. A portion of the larger insurers own several nonstandard insurance companies themselves.
